There is a saying that you have probably heard or said that goes: For every cloud, there is a silver lining. It can be hard to give this quote much credence, however, when your own personal dark cloud is hovering above you, pouring cold rain down your back.

We have all faced hopeless situations in our lives, whether it’s a failing marriage, a failing business, a failing poker hand, or countless other failures. Each unique situation seems dire, and the last thing you are willing to believe is that on the other side, there is a silver lining.

It is hard for us to look at these situations in a positive way. We cannot help but look at that dark cloud overhead and be angry or upset. In your mind, you made all the right decisions, took all the right steps, played all the right cards, but still came out on the losing end.

The game of life does not always treat us fairly, so in order to find that silver lining we have to turn those hopeless situations around. Even if you can’t win them all, you can always learn from the mistakes you have made. Learning is what creates the skills needed to succeed. Do not view past failures without looking at how you can turn them into something positive.

If there is something to be learned, figure it out and then move on from that past mistake. Dwelling on the negative will bring you no benefits. Tell yourself: I can’t believe this happened, but this is what I can do to make sure that doesn’t happen again.

Analyze the things you have done in the past and file them into two categories: things that helped me succeed or things that caused me to fail. When you have these things written out in front of you, it is easier to avoid repeating mistakes. Focus on the things that will keep you on the right path.

The mistakes you have made in the past during hopeless situations can be heavy stones that will sink you if you hold onto them for too long. Instead, use those things to create stepping stones that will help you cross the depths and reach your achievements.

The meaning of the silver lining is to give you hope. It is a beacon to show you that there is more behind the dark cloud. Once it has passed, you are given the opportunity to make something happen. Whether that something is positive or negative is up to you.

Mind Clearing Techniques That Improve Efficiency

Focus on Exactly What Needs Your Attention

 

Being overwhelmed and having a mental overload is plain crappy. This overload of thoughts produces symptoms that enable you to enjoy your work and sometimes, can even be a lack of motivation to get all the things you need done completed.

 

Learning how to clear your mind is a technique that will increase your focus on precisely what needs your attention at the moment, not only in your work, but also in your life. Simple questions like, “what do I need to get done today?” to the more broad question of  “what is my true calling?” can all be pondered on better when you have a clear mind.

 

It’s typical for people, on a daily basis, to have an endless to-do list, a lot of business on their plate and be left with the feeling of being overloaded.

 

How do you clear your mind so that your brain isn’t cluttered? Here are 5 steps to get you started on clearing your mind so you can focus on the things that need attention the most.

 

1. What do you want to accomplish?

The first step in completing any task or goal is to define exactly what it is you need to get out of it, whether it’s your freelance business, daily tasks, or a grocery store visit. You need to sit down and ask yourself “what do I need or want to accomplish?” and write the details down.

 

It doesn’t matter what the motivation behind it is, whether it’s to feel accomplished, earn money, or if it’s your life goal. Basically, you need to know why you’re doing what you’re doing to ever get to where you want to go. By explaining to yourself why or where you want to be, will give you the clarity you need to get there.

 

2. Make a list

The second step, after deciding what your goal is, is to write a list of ways to accomplish this goal. One helpful tip is to use the 80-20 Rule: You basically write down 20% of your tasks that will help you to achieve 80% of your goals. This method has been proven to be very effective.

 

Try and maintain this list to be as specific as you can possibly make it. The clearer you are, the more your mind will feel at ease. Overall, this is a way to get the thoughts out of your mind and onto paper, so your mind doesn’t have to keep wondering about it.

 

Here are a few brief examples:

 

  • Don’t: get more clients, make more income

 

Do: gain two new clients per month, increase my freelance income by $1,000

 

  • Don’t: get better at designing

 

Do: learn a specific design technique to better my designs

 

  • Don’t: increase my website’s traffic

 

Do: Perform tasks 1 and 2, every other day, every week for x amount of hours

 

3. Write down a list of things that you’ve been doing that are unnecessary

Step three can be daunting since most of us think that the things we do are all necessary. However, if you can sit down and really put some thought into your daily routine, and find areas that are necessary, it can help you tremendously. Tasks that can be labeled as unnecessary are those that seem to be important but actually hold little to no importance when trying to get the things done that you need to do.

 

It’s important, when developing this list, to be completely brutally honest with yourself. If you’re not honest, these simple things can hold you back greatly. A major aspect to clearing your mind is to be effective, not only productive. If you have trouble making this list, take the 80-20 Rule to help you, write down 80% of tasks that are not necessary and that only help with 20% of your desired accomplishments.

 

The main goal of this step is to see where you can give yourself more leeway to do other goal-oriented tasks all the while, clearing up more of your mind. Sometimes these tasks are quite small and go unnoticed until you write them down.

 

4. Perform the essentials

Now is the time to really put the 80-20 Rule into your plan. Taking your list from step 2, complete each of those tasks and stop! These are the tasks that will help you accomplish your clearly stated goal from step 1. This is also where you STOP doing the things you listed from Step 3.

 

It may be hard to completely quit the things you listed from step 3, but you have to try, and even if you stop doing one-to-two things at a time, it will help. Face it, we’re all human and life is a total learning experience. The best way to do anything, I have learned, is step-by-step. Start with the smaller things and work your way up, I know it will help you and it will give you encouragement to keep going.

 

5. Now your mind is clearer, better enjoy it!

If you’re using step 4 (which is implementing steps 1-3) you’re on your way to doing less in a day but seeing the same or more results, which therefore, will help you to clear your mind and be able to focus on the things that really need attention.

 

You are now being not only productive but effective.

 

Since you’ve made these lists, defined your goals and are doing away with the unnecessary, you’ll have more time to focus on what needs to be focused on and you’ll be able to enjoy it. When your mind is clear and you’re able to provide attention, other areas of interest will start to be important such as:

 

  • Finding ways to do more of the work you love
  • Improve and expand your business
  • More time for your ideas that have been put on the back burner
  • Learning how to live out the lifestyle you really want
  • And other things you feel are important

 

Clearing the Mind in 5 Steps

 

Much of this technique will be better maximized through trial and error. You must consistently stick with it. To wrap it up, here’s how to clear your mind:

 

1. Define precisely what you want to accomplish

2. Write down the tasks that will help you to succeed your goal

3. Write down everything you’re doing that is unnecessary

4. Begin by performing only the essentials

5. Enjoy a free and clear mind!

Methods to Finding the Source of Your Motivation

Whether it is a project that needs to be done for work, a chore to do at home, or a personal goal that needs to be accomplished, it takes a boost of motivation to get your started on the path to completion.

Without the proper motivation, success cannot be achieved in any task. Every person is different, so finding the source of inspiration is different for all of us. Once you know how to get yourself motivated, you can accomplish the things that need to be done.

Visualizing your achievement can be a great way to motivate yourself. If you want to lose weight, get a promotion, or start a business, the key is to see yourself reaching those goals. How do you look a few pounds lighter? How happy are you in your new position? Are you relieved to have your business up and running? Simply picturing your achievements in your mind can be an excellent motivator.

Fuel your motivation with preparation. If you want to achieve certain goals, you must have the skills to get there. If you know there are some areas that are lacking, then you need to improve those skills. Getting ready for the journey will help you to stay the course on your road to achievement. Be persistent in pursuing your goals and developing the skills you need to reach them.

Surround yourself with positive influences. Having nay-sayers in your midst can fill your head with negativity. In order to stay motivated, you need to make contact with people who want to support you in your goals. Positive thinking is contagious, so have positive people around that you can reach out to when you feel your motivation wane.

Regular brainstorming sessions can help you stay on track. Set aside a block of time each week or month in which you write down some thoughts about how to reach your goals or even a few new goals. When you allow your mind to think constructively, it will help you find inspiration in everything you do.

Take time to relax. Putting pressure on yourself will not get you to your goals any faster. If you feel yourself getting overwhelmed, step back and take a break. Work on something else. Play with your kids. Read a book. Work on a favorite hobby. When you give yourself a little downtime, you allow your batteries to recharge. True and Compassionate Story about Drugs, Addiction and Disease—Yes, Good Kids Do Drugs Too!

Your virtual assistant services firmly believe that God puts people in our lives for a reason, a season or a lifetime.  I met a truly remarkable woman on one of my writing forums who has turned a tragedy in her life into her life’s mission.  She lost her son to addiction and now is spreading the word about this horrible disease.

Sherry McGinnis has an eloquent way of writing and conveying her powerful message.  I hope you enjoy and learn from the knowledge she has obtained from this tragedy and go out and inform others of what is happening to our kids in today’s world.  If we can keep one child from ever experimenting with their first drug…then Sherry’s mission is well on the way!

If you’re a Baby Boomer or even a bit older as I am, you may recognize those lyrics from a song by Ella Fitzgerald and The Ink Spots.

Although written as a torch song of sorts, the words can apply to any of us, for any loss that we’ve experienced. For me, the song speaks to my personal loss of my son.

On December 2, 2002, at 1:15 in the morning, we received THE PHONE CALL.  That phone call that every parent dreads; the call that tells you that your life as you know it is now over. You will never be the same. There is now a huge black hole in your heart surrounded by enough muscle and tissue to keep you breathing and functioning to a certain degree but that’s about it.

You go through the motions. Everything you do now is done on autopilot; getting out of bed, dressing, perhaps taking care of other family members, eventually returning to work. You have no desire to do any of these things. You just want to stay in bed, in the fetal position, lights out, with no contact with the outside world, the so-called normal world.

Your world is no longer normal, why should anyone else’s be? Why should we have to interact with them? Why should we have to look at their smiling, happy faces – smiles that once adorned our own faces – now replaced by such a sad countenance that nobody wants to look at us?

Who can blame them? Nobody wants to be around sadness and despair. After all, if we get too close, the same thing may happen to us. We may become the person who nobody wants to be near. Yes, we may be the one who lost a child. That thought is so unbearable, so incomprehensible that we try to avoid all contact with anyone who has suffered this most egregious of happenstances.

Our children die from a variety of causes; illness, accidents, suicide, and homicide. When you get right down to it, it doesn’t matter that much how our child died, although some situations do seem sadder, but the bottom line is the same – our child is dead.  They are gone from our lives. All we have are our memories. As Cicero said – The life of the dead is placed in the memory of the living.

One particular illness, a rampant disease actually, a proven brain disease, that is killing our children by the thousands each year is Addiction; drugs and alcohol. In some places death from drugs supersedes death by vehicular accidents, a major killer of kids.

Heroin and cocaine deaths have now been supplanted by deaths from prescription pills. Yes, the meds we keep in our medicine cabinet for legitimate purposes are being stolen by our kids who use them not for medicinal purposes but to get high.

I could go on and on about the dangers of prescription pills and also the dangers of street drugs but space does not permit.

My son was a paramedic and an RN who had the world by the tail.  One mistake that he made, doing a line of cocaine given to him by a friend on his 17th birthday, followed him for the next 14 years until death put him out of his misery. Sadly, ours endures.

I urge everyone who reads this to understand that there is no guarantee of the perfect family, the perfect child who would never do drugs. Good kids do drugs too. The “not my child’ families may find themselves in for a rude awakening one day when they discover their beloved child is indeed doing drugs.

I can’t tell you how to spare your child from my son’s fate. After all I couldn’t save my own son. But my advice to you is to learn all you can about drugs and addiction because you never know when this scourge may affect you and yours.

I miss my son with every beat of my heart. As Rose Kennedy said when JFK was killed, it’s unnatural. No parent should outlive their child.

September 11th Tribute to an American Hero – Edward Rall

Tribute to an American Hero that was lost on September 11, 2001

Edward Rall – We Will NEVER Forget!

As September 11 approaches my hope is that you will remember an American Hero that was tragically lost on that day 8 years ago.  I am honored to have Your Everything Services be part of the Project 2,996, a national recognized movement among bloggers to memorialize and remember each of the victims of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.  Project 2,996 is a way that we can all contribute in some small way to these fallen heroes and their families that have suffered every day since that horribly tragedy.

I’m sure most of us can remember exactly where we were and what we were doing that very moment we learned of the attacks.

Most of us were doing the exact same things that some of the fallen were doing.  Thinking of our children, parents, husbands and wives, making phone calls to express our love and to comfort them in any way we could.  Every person that lost their life that day in spite of their imminent death, were focused on their cherished loved ones and most importantly on love.  There is no doubt that Edward Rall and his fellow brothers had the same sort of thoughts in those heroic final moments.

My tribute is to Edward Rall, 44 years old, who was a Firefighter for the New York Fire Department and lost his life serving others on the ground of the World Trade Center.  Rescue 2 is known as an elite group of firefighters with a serious mission: to save fellow firefighters or civilians who are trapped in blazes or endangered by urban disasters.

Rall and his fellow firefighters proceeded on that day with the same urgency, commitment and determination to rescue any one involved in the 9/11 disaster.

New York lost 340 firefighters, two retired members, the chaplain, and two paramedics on that horrific September morning.  These men and women bravely laid down their lives to rescue, serve and protect their fellow Americans.  Words escape me in trying to express my deepest appreciation for their bravery and selfless acts.

An interesting comment I found recently was:

I was doing a concert the other day and on the stage I saw a dog tag so I picked it up.  It read, “F.D.N.Y. Edward Rall, Missing in Action, September 11, 2001”.  I had to look up the name and read about him.  I am so honored to have found this and I want his family to know how much I appreciate what he did and the sacrifice he made for the City of New York and for his Nation…Thank you and God Bless. (Anonymous, dated June 14, 2009)

I truly hope this person was able to make contact with Rall’s family and give them a cherished memento.

It’s been 8 years now and a day doesn’t go by that we don’t think of you and miss you. Things haven’t been the same since 9/11 and they never will. When I think of Ed I see him with a Coors light in one hand and a cigar in the other with a big smile on his face. We had a lot of good times together and a lot of laughs. Miss you buddy. You will learn not only of the events of this tragic day, but also of the countless “smaller” emergencies they respond to that don’t make the headlines. This world is a better place because of them.”

  • I know Ed and his family for over 20 years now. We miss him terribly and our hearts go out to his wife Darlene and his sons Joe, Matt & Dan. As my husband once said ” we were suppose to grow old together” but that came to an unexpected halt and know we grow old without our good friend and try to carry on and be there for Ed’s family as much as we can .   1. Contribution. What you give is most likely what you will receive in return. Seek out and determine what you can contribute to your team or work environment. Be engaging at work and that will lead you to experience higher levels of engagement at home and in your community. Whether you work virtually or on-site, be an active part and extend your brilliant contributions.
  2. Responsibility and accountability. If it is to be it is up to we! Hold others accountable for their engagement while at the same time take responsibility for your own engagement. Encourage others to continue to contribute and elevate employee engagement and interaction. Step up to the plate and be accountable and responsible.
  3. Master your personal energy. Your energy is your core raw material for engagement. Find ways to increase your levels of mental, emotional, physical and spiritual energy while also ensuring you take time for energy recovery. You must learn how to find ways to disengage from work to recharge and rejuvenate ourselves for the work ahead. So do something for yourself and have FUN, relieve that stress and focus on tasks that you know will de-stress you.
  4. Be strong! People who know what their strengths are use them on a daily basis and use them in the service of others. In doing so, people report higher levels of authentic happiness at work. What are your gifts or qualities you bring to your work and what activities do you engage in that strengthen you? Know your strengths while also knowing what strengthens you!
  5. Own your work. There is a great deal of truth to the statement: nobody washes a rented car. Some people make their marks while others sign their names (deep). Make your work a signature of who you are! Be authentic, honest, and ethical and leave an impression on others by showcasing the person you truly are!
  6. Get rid of the “if only”. Stop the “if only” thinking and do what you can with what you have wherever you are! Don’t postpone your engagement efforts waiting for the perfect opportunity. If only my company would do this, if only my supervisor would recognize me, if only I had a different job. Cease that negative thinking and practice the great advice from the NCAA basketball coach, John Wooden: don’t let what you cannot do interfere with what you can do!

 

Remember to focus on the positive things in your life and what you can contribute no matter what the situation is. Be the one that makes a difference and end that negative energy and feelings and you will see a tremendous change in your life and your employment. Always give specifically whatever it is you need!
