Get up Early and Start the Day off Right!

For many people, sunrise is not a friend. I love watching the sun come up! It’s my favorite time of day. But there are some who instead of bounding out of bed, ready to greet the day, prefer pulling the covers over your head and catching just a few more minutes of sleep.

Then, you reluctantly give in and stumble out of your cozy bed in search of coffee before you feel like a human being again.

You might be happy with this morning routine, but if not you don’t have to accept it as the start to your day. When you wake up fresh in the morning, you are ready to tackle all of your goals, and in some cases, with a smile on your face.

Despite what you might think, you don’t have to remain among those who classify themselves as “not a morning person.” If you want to change, it can be done simply by changing your habits.

The first step is always to admit that the habit you have is not working in your best interest and that you want to change. Understand that the first thing you try won’t necessarily be the right method for you, so don’t become discouraged. Just move on to another way and keep going until you find what works best.

You’ve probably heard this before, especially if you are a parent: Routine is very important! It may not always be possible to stick with the exact same routine from one night to the next, but try to stay as close as possible to your original plan. Eat healthy throughout the day. Avoid foods that are full of sugars and fat close to bedtime. Eat dinner at the same time each day, several hours before bedtime. Do not ingest any stimulants, such as caffeine, before you go to bed.

One thing to try is to eat a healthy dinner each night. When you do, make notes in a journal that describe how you felt when you woke up, how easy it was to get out of bed, your mood after you begin to get ready for the day. After a few days, you will be able to see if this is working for you.

Get some exercise in the early part of your day. When you keep your body in shape, you will sleep better. It is more beneficial to exercise in the morning instead of at night. If you exercise closer to bedtime, your blood will be pumping, which makes it harder to fall asleep. That extra energy boost that you get will be more helpful at the start of your day, so it just makes more sense to get an early workout.

Do something that makes you happy and relaxed before going to bed. Read a chapter or two of your book, do some yoga or meditation. Do not do something that is likely to cause stress, such as balancing your check book or paying bills. Stressing about money is one of the leading causes of sleepless nights.

Also, switch off the television and computer before you start getting ready for bed. The light from their screens can decrease your melatonin levels, making it even more difficult to fall asleep.

Before going to bed, plan to do something that you enjoy first thing in the morning. Maybe do some sun salutations, or even just enjoy your coffee on the patio to soak up some sunshine. Don’t worry about your to-do list until after you are up and ready to take on the day.

3. Carpe Diem!

Seize the day! Do something spontaneous. Break out of your shell and go do something that you never thought you would have done before. Accept last-minute invitations with friends. Get that tattoo you have been thinking about. Get up there and belt out a song at karaoke night. Just go for it!

4. Get off your beaten path!

Get out of your shell and try something new. Go for a hike. Join a book club. Try sushi. Volunteer. Push yourself to train for a marathon. If there is anything that you have on a list to try “maybe someday,” today is that day! Don’t make excuses. Don’t think about all of the reasons why not to do something. Only focus on why you should.

5. Crank up your creativity!

Try out a new hobby for once. Local craft stores are always holding classes for one activity or another- cake decorating, jewelry making, knitting, sewing, painting. Nothing can be more satisfying than looking at something that you created with your own hands.

6. Make changes in your environment!

A simple freshening up of your surroundings can make miles of improvement to your life and your attitude. Try a new paint color on the walls. Buy a new piece of furniture. Change your bedding. Buy a fish tank (or one of those new cool jellyfish tanks!). Even adopting a new pet can make for a positive change.

7. Find new friends or reconnect with old ones!

There are so many ways to meet people these days that share your similar interests. Look for events in your area or sign up on Meetup.com to find groups of people in your area who want to meet new people too. If you have a friend that you haven’t spoken to in a while, invite them out to lunch. Foster the relationships that will bring value to your life and allow you to add value to theirs as well.

8. Keep your mind on the here and now!

When you are on vacation, be on vacation! Don’t let your mind stay wrapped around the issues at home- bills, work, and projects. The same goes for anything you do to add more pep to your step. Concentrate on the task before you. Don’t let the outside seep into your present thinking.

9. Give your attitude a tune-up!

Stop making excuses and adding things to a list of what you “don’t do.” If you want to make your life more exciting, you have to be a willing participant. Open your mind to all of the new opportunities around you and you might be surprised to find out that you do in fact enjoy fishing.

10. Leave your troubles at the door.

Your issues and hang-ups have no place in the time you spend with friends. You are not together to commiserate with each other. Friends are supposed to uplift and empower each other when they are together. Just round up your issues, scoot them out the door and tell them, “You don’t have to go home, but you can’t stay here!”

The Silver Linings of Hopeless Situations

There is a saying that you have probably heard or said that goes: For every cloud, there is a silver lining. It can be hard to give this quote much credence, however, when your own personal dark cloud is hovering above you, pouring cold rain down your back.

We have all faced hopeless situations in our lives, whether it’s a failing marriage, a failing business, a failing poker hand, or countless other failures. Each unique situation seems dire, and the last thing you are willing to believe is that on the other side, there is a silver lining.

It is hard for us to look at these situations in a positive way. We cannot help but look at that dark cloud overhead and be angry or upset. In your mind, you made all the right decisions, took all the right steps, played all the right cards, but still came out on the losing end.

The game of life does not always treat us fairly, so in order to find that silver lining we have to turn those hopeless situations around. Even if you can’t win them all, you can always learn from the mistakes you have made. Learning is what creates the skills needed to succeed. Do not view past failures without looking at how you can turn them into something positive.

If there is something to be learned, figure it out and then move on from that past mistake. Dwelling on the negative will bring you no benefits. Tell yourself: I can’t believe this happened, but this is what I can do to make sure that doesn’t happen again.

Analyze the things you have done in the past and file them into two categories: things that helped me succeed or things that caused me to fail. When you have these things written out in front of you, it is easier to avoid repeating mistakes. Focus on the things that will keep you on the right path.

The mistakes you have made in the past during hopeless situations can be heavy stones that will sink you if you hold onto them for too long. Instead, use those things to create stepping stones that will help you cross the depths and reach your achievements.

The meaning of the silver lining is to give you hope. It is a beacon to show you that there is more behind the dark cloud. Once it has passed, you are given the opportunity to make something happen. Whether that something is positive or negative is up to you.
